Fraud from APL*APPLE ITUNES STORE 866-712-7753 CA
Please be aware if you have an unauthorized charge from a merchant listed as, APL*APPLE ITUNES STORE 866-712-7753 CA, this is a long running scheme involving a fraudulent charge claiming to be a legitimate iTunes purchase.
Update: To be clear, Apple is not the one who is responsible for this fraud. Rather, someone else has made an iTunes account and used your payment info to make purchases. At least that’s what I can gather. There’s some argument about whether the listed vender is actually Apple or not, given that the phone number appears to be fake. However, rest assured if you contact Apple you will be refunded for your charges like I was.
Recently I was the victim of an unauthorized charge to my account. Last night, I checked my checking account online, and found that I had been charged two payments of over $20, which I could not account for. The funds were on authorization, meaning they had been reserved, but not yet released. The vender was listed as, APL*APPLE ITUNES STORE 866-712-7753 CA.
I opened up my iTunes software, and logged into my iTunes account which reported, accurately, that, other than a few free apps, I hadn’t made a purchase in the last few months.
Here is where it gets kind of confusing. After some investigation, I discovered that I’m not the only one to receive a mysterious, and unauthorized charge from APL*APPLE ITUNES STORE 866-712-7753 CA, the number, listed in the vender name, is not even registered to Apple Inc. I discovered a thread full of people who’d received unauthorized charges by a vendor of the same name for purchases which they did not make, they detailed how, after calling the number listed their call was answered by a recording, directing them to visit a non-existent website.
It seems this seemingly innocuous charge, via APL*APPLE ITUNES STORE 866-712-7753 CA, is the first step for a fraudulent operation, the goal being to see if the account holder will notice the charge in the first place and to test the legitimacy of the stolen card. In the event the charge is not reported and immediate action is not taken, victims report later finding charges over $100 to their accounts from various businesses and services which they have had no dealings with. Some of you may already be familiar with this scheme under the name, “51p iTunes fraud”, which you can read more about here.
It’s important to know whether or not to be suspicious of a transaction. In my case I was being charged a total of $43, by, APL*APPLE ITUNES STORE 866-712-7753 CA, followed by a false number which isn’t even registered to Apple.
However, under normal circumstances, if you have recently opened up an iTunes account, and you have just filled in your payment info, you may notice an authorization on your card for about $1.00 by iTunes (without the fake number), please note, this is normal. iTunes reserves a very small amount of money on your card, just to make sure it is a real card, and that you have entered valid payment information. Even most free trial services over the internet will attempt to reserve a small amount of money on your credit / debit card (if you have given it to them), simply to make sure the card is a real one. After reserving the $1 amount, they will cancel the transaction and the $1 will re-transfer over into your available balance.
If you suspect you are a victim
If you see any unauthorized charges on your account via APL*APPLE ITUNES STORE 866-712-7753 CA,
- First open up your iTunes software, login, and check your recent purchases to make sure you did not purchase anything
- If you see no purchases listed on your account that would account for the charge, visit the iTunes Express Lane Support page
- Under, iTunes Store, check, Purchases, Billing & Redemption
- Then select, iTunes Store account billing, input the required info and click, Continue
- You will be given a choice of 3 contact options, phone, chat or email. Phone or chat work best. In my case, I choose chat.
Once you are speaking (or typing) to a customer support person, simply inform them of your situation, that you are being charged, via APL*APPLE ITUNES STORE 866-712-7753 CA, for purchases which you did not make, and they will see to it that you are refunded (refund may take up to 24 hours or more).
The next step is to contact your bank about deactivating the compromised credit / debit card and issuing a new one.
Since I do not like waiting on the phone, I drove to my local branch (US Bank) where I was able to inform someone of my situation face-to-face and get my problem resolved very quickly.
As much as having your card compromised sucks, it did make me like Apple, and US Bank more, for being so quick and helpful.
Take Steps to Protect Yourself
There are things which you can do to insure that something like this does not happen to you again. In my case, when I discovered the charge from iTunes on my account, I’d already made purchases on my debit card which put me in negative balance. Since my bank was paying for transactions on my behalf with money I didn’t have, they were charging me overdraft charges for the amount they spent on top of the amount that I was in the negative. So, since I was negative 30 on my balance, they charged me another 30, making me a total of $60 in debt.
One thing you can do is just ask your bank to refuse transaction on your debit card or in your account which would put you in the negative. This way, even if someone does make a purchase with your info, at least you don’t have to worry about them putting you in a negative balance. You may get a refund from the store, but unless the bank made a calculation error, they usually do not reverse overdraft charges.
